Wednesday 2nd June 2010

Final class today, I presented my finals today. HOPE EVERYONE LIKES THEM.

1. MELBOURNE’S SUBURBAN CLOUDS
Photo taken on a 6mp camera
Manipulated on Photoshop with multiple layers
I have added highlights and low lights
I have changed the density of colour
I have darkened the land on purpose because I wanted the sky to stand out.
I have used two images and joined them together by adding more clouds
This was difficult because I couldn’t tell when one cloud was starting and the other one was ending.

2. ‘MELBOURNE’ BANNER
Taken on a 12 mp camera.
I used Photoshop.
I cropped each image using the quick selection tool by adding and subtracting parts I wanted and didn’t want.
I then copied and transformed each image to make them fit all together.
This set up reminds me of the old ABC TV days when they use to get kids to spell out words.

3. WALKING THROUGH MELBOURNE
I used Photoshop
I used smudging in between the legs because I couldn’t subtract the area.
I used the magic wand tool to add and subtract the background.
I added a dark contrast to add mystery because you can’t see where they are going.
I changed the gamma colour, lowered the density, added a blue filter and changed the hue colour.
I flipped the background image.
I made the magpie darker so it stood out as well as changed the light colour of the lamp post.
This image creates an optical illusion because the image of 2 females in the foreground are the same dimensions as the same image in the background. Even thought to the eye it looks larger.
Influenced by Andrea Polli.

4. FOREVERCHANGING WEATHER.
I used Photoshop
I started of by smudging all the clouds together.
I then added highlights using the blur tool.
I then used the magic wand and highlighted the area of the house in the foreground and on the top left hand side another house and used a sketch filter of charcoal.
This created a dark black overlay with a white outline which I liked.
I then smudged out the fence line so the white wasn’t so visible to the house.

5. EVERCHANGING BLUE SKY
Took an hour film of the sky.
Set up digital camcorder in my backyard.
Using Final Cut Pro I condensed the 60 minute footage into 6 minutes.
I had to cut certain areas and changed the speed at which it would be played.
Normal speed is 100% and at times my video ranges from 25% to 5000%.
As I was watching the footage I noticed some birds flying across so I have slowed down the video so you can see them.

Wednesday 26th May 2010

Today's tutorial started off with watching some video's made by various artists, including Tony Oursler and Mathew Barneys's Cresmaster cycle. I found the Cresmaster cycle very disturbing because people we dying and it was very subjective but I did relay love the work of Tony Oursler. specially the first couple we watched of a fist hitting a table that was projected onto a building. i could image a person starting just underneath and being scared out of their wits because this big fist is coming down.

Today I finished off my movie on Final Cut Pro and I think I have completed my last final as well. I didn't have any of my pictures saved on my USB but i did have an image I had experimented with and added some more to it. The image is of clouds and the pictures really spoke to me because I had never seen clouds spaced out like this before. i did use a smudging tool and made the house in the foreground darker.

Hopefully I will be able to present next week and tomorrow I will head out to Officeworks and get all my work printed.

Wednesday 19th May 2010

Today was our second lesson about Video art and considering I have already filmed my Video I was really booking forward to learning about how to turn my recording into art work.

Jenna taugh me how to use Final Cut Pro as to iMovie beacuse she knew that program better. It didn't really matter to me because I have never used either.

We started the session off today with people's presentaions about their first completed artwork then had quiet time to work on our own projects. Before our time was up Jenna went thought a tutorial about artists Video art. Some of it was very weird. We watched one video for about 4 minutes and it was about a guy who was walking into a pool and then jumped and then was frozen in the air. I expected him to go in but he just stayed there. Then he disapeared and then walked away frm the pool.

I can't wait until next week when i can hopefully finish off my video and come up with an idea for my last digital art piece. I have 8 images of clouds I would like to use but i'm not sure how. There are elements of shape in each so I might incorportae that in some way.

12th May 2010

Its been a while. Two weeks of placement has flow past and lucky this class temporary closed for the time being. Coming back was good, I had a lot of ideas and questions.

Today we looked at video art and different artists that have influenced this particular type of art during the years. we particularly looked at Nam Jane Piak video's on YouTube. Other people's work was weird and a bit unsettling to watch. after that we say how to use a video camera but because I had already taped my clouds video I just continued with my work.

Today I finished another final. I will post this image up. I was very Happy with it because it had my 2 friends in it as well as an idea I had come up with.
I want to find an artist who has done similar work so when I present my artwork, I can talk about my influences. I have digitally changed a lot of this image for instance the colour as you can plainly see.

I will be looking at the video art world website and choosing an artist who I find interesting and adding some of their work onto my blog.

The artist whos work I found interesting was Claire Bain. Born in New Mexico, United States, 1975.
Her film work has informed my painting and photography, and vice versa. She has two approaches to film/video. One is more formal, primarily concerned with light, composition, emulsion and rhythm; meaning reveals itself gradually or indirectly. The other approach is a direct communication of thoughts, observations and questions through the use of characters.

I choose Clair Bain becasue of the work she has done with cats, I have not seen it all but from what I have its humourous.

April 21st 2010

Today Jenna bought in the Tablets and the pens again for us to work on. But first we went through presentations and I was first to present. How fun. I showed my final (will also post on here) and talked about the program and where I got my ideas from and my topic. I passed around my final as I spoke about it.

Jenna went through how to create a clone on Corel painter X as well as animation. She explained that with animation there are about 25 stills per second and that if it was a movie that goes for 2 minutes there will be a lot and a lot of stills.

During the day I worked on my second Final. During the Ester break i went over to my friends house and with her 12mp camera I took photos of 3 of my friends making out each letter spelling out Melbourne with their bodies. I opened up all the letters in Photoshop and traced around their bodies using the quick selection tool and then copied and pasted them onto another canvas that was much wider. This final product reminds me of the ABC channel and how they use kids to spell out words. I am extremely happy with this final, all I need to do now is to figure out how I am going to produce them.

April 14th 2010

Today we worked on the drawing tablets. It was a good change to working with a mac computer. Jenna went over different ways of approaching a task and ways of using the program Corel painter X. This is properly my favourite program. It is exactly like drawing with real materials but instead we are stuck in front of a computer screen. I didn't have an idea to use with the program for today but will think about it and next week we will be working on the Tablets as well.

I'm presenting one of my final art pieces next week. I have one, and i think its a good start. I am happy with my first attempt of anything digital ever produced.
My other 5 finals include a movie about clouds, and some other images that I will manipulate using programs discussed previously.

The image above is one i constructed using the Tablet as well as the pen instead of the mouse. It took a while to get use to but it was well worth it. In this image I highlighted the word and used a lot of different manipulations.

March 31st 2010

Today's class was based on collage.
We looked at the work of Picasso and Braque in the early 19th century. These artworks were posted on the digital art blog by Jenna.
This consists of our lecture where we view images and talk about ideas that we will be exploring during the day.
I asked today about how I get my movie on to the computer and Jenna informed me that I need a external hard drive. So she helped me partition my hard drive.
She also informed me that because I have the information/ movie on a DV tape that I already have a hard copy.
After all he fiddling around I started working on my clouds images I took last week just walking around VU. Jenna showed us on the board how to copy and paste and highlight and place two images together. I played around with the gradient on the images and tried encompassing different aspects of different images/clouds together.
