March 31st 2010

Today's class was based on collage.
We looked at the work of Picasso and Braque in the early 19th century. These artworks were posted on the digital art blog by Jenna.
This consists of our lecture where we view images and talk about ideas that we will be exploring during the day.
I asked today about how I get my movie on to the computer and Jenna informed me that I need a external hard drive. So she helped me partition my hard drive.
She also informed me that because I have the information/ movie on a DV tape that I already have a hard copy.
After all he fiddling around I started working on my clouds images I took last week just walking around VU. Jenna showed us on the board how to copy and paste and highlight and place two images together. I played around with the gradient on the images and tried encompassing different aspects of different images/clouds together.

Today we looked at Digital Photography. When I picked Introduction to Digital art this is what i thought it was all about. Obviously I was wrong. But surprised by today. We looked at some artwork and then discussed digital camera and the different settings you can use and change.

The artworks we were looking at all told a story and were presented like a movie scene. The different between art photography and snap shots is that photography coveys a message that snap shots doesn't. Jenna then took us over to the Filming studio and I took a photo of the room and after that we wondered around the UNI grounds and took photos with our digital camera.

I finally understood what i wanted to achieve in my final and today i nearly completed a final artwork. I was so proud. Today was a great day beacuse Jenna spent some time going over and over my assignment and the requirments with me so i'm all set now to complete my final folio.
During the week i had been writting down ideas and drawing little sketches of what i want to achieve and today was great beacuse we got to work with Photoshop and i found that to be a great program to use. prefer that over illustrator. I can't wait until we use the drawing tablets but for now i want to finalise my proposal and finish off one of my artworks and print it out.

Today we started the lesson off by watching some clips about Phone art and the different ways you can use mobiles in a creative maner. We also looked at differnt websites and how other people uses phones in their art.

We bought our mobile phones to school like always but we were allowed to use them in class aswell. Jenna showed us how to turn on bluetooth and how to transfer things from phone to mac and mac to phone. This is completely different from a PC.

I played around on Adobe Illustator today again and I think I picked up more but it is still very complicated.

I spoke to Jenna about my topic for my assignments about messages. She spoke to me for a while about what I can do but I struggling with the concept aswell. The work I was doing was to commercial or looked to much like scrapbooking, which is what I love to do but its not Digital Art. I am extremely confused with what is considered Digita Art and what is not. This is something I will have to explore more about.

I was a bit frustrated by the end of class because I know my topic isn;t strong or that I don;t have a good foundation to work off and it frustrates me that these Mac are confusing to work with but it is a challenge.

In today's class we looked at some Digital Art websites, in particular looking at Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer. There are was very political and eye catching and large.

After looking at images we were asked to brain storm some ideas and write them down. Firstly I thought of the colour's of the rainbow, in a spiral with the words getting larger as the spiral gets bigger. Then I was coming up with emotive words like love, passion, power, integrity, all words that mean so much by themselves. the other idea I have was a simple flower with 5 petals and writing all the different types of flowers inside the flower.

After our brainstorm Jenna showed us how to use Adobe Illustrator CS4. This program was very tricky and complicated. You understand how to do something one time but by the time you go to do it again you have forgotten and being on an Apple Mac computer it is more difficult for me because I love PCs. I have written notes to myself as to how the program words but it will be hard because I don't have this program at home.

At the end of class Jenna showed us how to burn our work onto a CD. I bought a USB down so I just used that but its nice to know that you can burn more than one time on a DVD/CD.

I did like some on the work that was posted on the Digital Art blog made by Jenna. The website for these images are as follows:
http://www.tutorial9.net/resources/32-beautiful-text-art-creations/
each image gives me an idea of what I could possible achieve in my own artwork.

First- Time spend alone - David Wicks 2008
Second - Bedside Dreams -Quim Alcantara 2010
First 3 hour class of 'Introduction to Digital Art' with Jenna Corcoran.

I hope to get an understanding and appreciation for digital art throught this 12 week subject. I want to have a better understanding of digital technology as well as presenting ideas in a digital manner.

I had a look on the Rhizome website and found an artist artwork that did look quite appealing to me but it was in a different language. The artist is Quim Alcantara. I did find his artwork within the website but its not much use if it is not English.

Another artist digital artwork that has caught my eye was David Wicks - Time spend alone. This artwork was make on 10/2/2008.
